WHAT IS MODERN JIVE?
do i need a partner?
HOW DOES IT WORK?
WHAT TO EXPECT
Modern Jive is a generic term for our freestyle partner dance that combines elements of traditional partner dances like Ballroom, Salsa, Lindy Hop and West Coast Swing, with impressions from solo styles like Hip Hop, Ballet and Contemporary. It is a beautiful fusion of dance technique!
Modern Jive is a super-freestylable dance, meaning it can be done anywhere, to any genre of music (provided it’s in a 4/4-time signature – lucky for us, that’s most pop-hits these days!). To paint a picture, we usually dance to the kind of stuff you’d hear on the radio – think Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, Sabrina Carpenter and lots more.
Being a two-step dance, our Modern Jive footwork is super simple – it’s just like walking! If you’re just starting out on your partner dancing journey, or you’ve already done some other styles and you’re looking to learn something new, this dance is definitely for you!
NO PARTNER REQUIRED!
Just show up, and we’ll show you some footwork and then we’ll teach everyone a few moves. Everyone – even those who bring partners – will rotate every few minutes, meaning you’ll get to meet lots of different people and have a really social night out as our regulars help you through the moves.
After the first class, a short “General Dance” session will give you plenty of time to go find someone to practice your new moves with, before we jump back into our second round of classes. During the second session, we will recap the moves you learnt earlier in the night.
Le Step Beginner Classes operate on a 12-week curriculum, where we’ll go through each of 12 Base Moves. Because we run on a rolling cycle, you can start any week you like.
If you happen to miss a week here and there, it’s no problem – the beauty of our MJ routines are that they start and finish in the same place every week, so they’ll link up no matter what order you put them in.
We also go through each Base Move a minimum of three times every cycle (that’s 3 times every 12 weeks, at each venue).
If you’re just beginning your journey at Le Step, we’ll need you to fill out a quick registration form on our booking platform called Momence. You can do this online, or our doors open at 7:10pm at every class if you’d like to do this in-person.
At 7:30pm we’ll start off with some easy stepping, then we’ll make some rows and go through our moves for the night.
After a 45 minute class, we split up into some social dancing. This is a chance for you to practice your skills – and to
At around 8:45pm, we’ll split into three classes: Beginner Review, Bridging and Intermediate. Check out our Progression Notes for info on how to “Level Up”.

DRESS CODE
Preferably, wear comfortable clothes that aren’t too restrictive. Despite the fact that you’ll probably be working up a sweat, we encourage you to come dressed smart-casual!
Wear clothes that you might wear out to a party or club.
Sometimes (especially in the summer months) it’s a good idea to bring a hand towel as well – you’ll be working up a real sweat!
For those of you who really get pumping, consider bringing a spare shirt or three.
But remember above all else that; the most important thing to wear is deodorant!
NO-NO's
This is some filler text, but I am hoping to add in a list of expectations of our members, etc.
